Don't blame an earthquake

I remembered that I was playing football with my friend, I was still a young man who spent time with outdoor activity without sophisticate gadget nowadays that make us like have our own world. Suddenly, I couldn't control myself, confused and eventually fallen down. I didn't know what happening was, I looked people going out from their house while looking like confusion at the time. I heard the conversation among them vividly that they said "earthquake". I have known about earthquake since elementary school that I got from textbook, I just knew that earthquake was caused by plate movement in tens to hundred miles underneath of earth's surface. I didn't how it feels like, how it looks like before, then I came back to home directly and I looked my family was standing outside when the shock was normal, we turned on a tv to watch news directly. We were very surprised that a 9.1 earthquake was occurring on Aceh and mostly, TV channel was airing about it. 

 

I look that certain buildings was broken while people werw running to save them-self, sometimes they stampeded each other then falling down and trampled by other people. I remember that it occurred on December 26, 2004. The next certain years after the tragedy that killed more than 170.000 people in Aceh, I realized that I have involved in one of the biggest tragedy in Indonesia. My lecturer has taught me more about the earthquake so that it quite answered my inquiry since adolescent. In geological perspective, earthquake was caused a convergent plate movement namely tectonic earthquake. As we've known that Indonesia was surrounded by some major plates (Eurasian plate, Pacific plate, Indo-Australia plate) that always move some inch or more per year and generated volcanoes along Western Sumatra - Southern Java - Western Sulawesi - Northern Sulawesi also known as ring of fire. 

 

Usually, earthquake was followed by tsunami but it depends the depth, the magnitude and others analysis. Japan has developed some shock-resistant skyscraper building that wouldn't be broken when Tsunami was occurring. In fact, it destroyed everything which was passed including skyscraper building. Some technologies has created to predict it in order to prevent more victims that killed due to earthquake but man-made is not perfect, they still found some weaknesses thereby they couldn't predict it accurately. We may think that developed countries such USA, Japan, America, England, Germany etc used to create sophisticate technology perfectly but they don't. Certain geologists have done some research about earthquake and making some publications but they didn't ever know, when it comes, where it comes and mostly, their prediction was miss. Allah said in Al-Qur'an :

وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ مِنْ مُصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُو عَنْ كَثِيرٍ

"and all disasters that have befallen you were caused by your own hands, and Allah forgives most of them (Your mistakes)" (Asy Syuro : 30)

Finding the best final assignment topic

Final assignment is significant thing when you are studying in university to get your bachelor's degree, particularly Geological student. Being important, we try too find a best topic hardly by way of reading a paper, reading a preceding senior's final assignment that may help you to find a best topic. Geological engineering comprise of oil and gas, mining, geothermal, hidrogeology, geotechnical etc which enable the students to choose one of them as a topic so that we would find a diverse topic about Geological. The main issue is "how big" an influence of our final assignment topic for getting a job later on is, all students may ask about this inquiry. Based on my working interview experiences, Interviewer would ask about your final assignment topic in spite of it was not in line with applied company background because they could assess your understanding of final assignment. If you could explain it clearly and fluently, it would be a value-added for your assessment but I have shared about working selection process in company with many people that conveyed a proper final assignment could be a value-added.

Moreover, mining world obscurity has led companies to make some policies such as cost-savings, laid off, etc that aimed to maintain company existence. Nowadays, company is tendency to hire an experienced people than fresh graduate that it would make them easier due to they mustn't train her/his first to adjust. Does it mean a fresh graduates don't have a chance? absolutely no. Like I've explained previously, if your final assignment topic was in line with company background, it would help you a lot.

How about people who would like to take oil and gas as final assignment topic amid oil price uncertainty? Should we change it? should we're optimistic? it depends you. It may the worst oil and gas condition among few years lately, it was started when USA found a shale oil that made oil production was increase and made price fell further into $30/barrel, it give a big impact to oil company which is few oil company and service company have been starting to close down one at a time. Unfortunately, one of oil companies policy is assessed would harm for final assignment student namely, they wouldn't receive final assignment student until unknown deadline. But, you shouldn't dispirited due to some of oil and gas consultants are still receiving final assignment student. They are not a big oil company as your imagine but they offer either qualified experts as well as in oil company or data equipment that would help us to finish our topic. In fact, some students were not familiar with oil and gas consultant existence because some of them don't have a website addresses yet you should inquire this thing to your seniors somehow. 

All in all, I suggest you to take geotechnical as your topic due to mining company either holding companies or subsidiary companies need a geotechnical engineering monitoring stability of mining area. On other hand, geotechnical engineering is needed in construction company to develop lots of residences intensively. Allah said in Al-Qur'an : 

 وَعَسَى أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ وَعَسَى أَنْ تُحِبُّوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ شَرٌّ لَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

"Perhaps, you hate something whereas it was good for you and perhaps, you like something, whereas it was too bad for you. Allah knows while you don't" (QS.Al-Baqarah:216)

The messenger said :

"when The messenger is confronted with 2 options, he always choose an easiest one as long as it don't contain a guilt if it does then he keep away from it" (HR. Muslim)
